Refinery Operator - Los Angeles Refinery


Refinery Overview



This position is located at our Los Angeles Refinery (LAR), which is composed of two linked facilities located roughly five miles apart in Carson and Wilmington, CA, about 15 miles southeast of the Los Angeles International Airport. Carson serves as the front-end of the refinery by processing crude oil, and Wilmington serves as the backend by upgrading the products.

Description

An Operator works rotating shifts on various units within the refinery which process or produce crude oil, petroleum coke, fuel oil, intermediates, gasoline, diesel, steam, electricity and other products. Some of the processes involved use hazardous and volatile materials under high temperature and pressure. Operators are exposed to various work conditions including outside weather and elements, blowing air, heat, noise, vibration and occasionally working from heights and confined spaces. Operators must follow safe work practices including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In addition, Operators perform various duties required to keep their assigned processing unit/area operating safely and at specified production/run rates.


Responsibilities


The Operator may be responsible for:

* Maintaining equipment and operations.
* Climbing ladders, tanks and towers.
* Taking samples/readings of various process streams.
* Initiating work orders and permitting for work related to the assigned unit.
* Maintaining proper and safe process operations of the operating equipment.
* Serving on the refinery emergency response fire brigade.
* Communicating effectively during the shift and at shift relief regarding key process unit and equipment information.

Relocation is not available for this position.

Qualifications


Basic/Required Qualifications

* Legally authorized to work in the United States on a regular, full-time basis with no restrictions
* Must be at least 18
* Have a valid driver's license
* High school diploma or G.E.D
* Willingness to perform/comply with the following:
* To work at least an 8-hour rotating shift and up to a 12-hour rotating shift, which includes some weekends and holidays (Employees generally work 48 hours one week, 36 hours the next, rotating between days and nights)
* To work overtime
* To work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos
* To work near large, hot, high-speed machines
* To climb up to 250 feet in height
* To lift up to 50 pounds
* To work around chemicals, including acids and bases
* To wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
* To maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
* To perform fire fighting duties
* To work outside in harsh weather conditions
* To work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat
* To read technical procedures and materials in English
* To learn computer software associated with process operations

Preferred Qualifications

* Associate's degree or Technical certification in Process Technology from an accredited school
* Military certifications that are process operations related
* One or more years of direct experience working as a process operator, maintenance or technician in a refinery, chemical, power, nuclear, wastewater treatment, or pharmaceutical industry
* Record of formal emergency response training within the last 24 months
* Experience working in the Los Angeles Refinery

Database Administrator

Responsibilities:

The Database Administrator is a contributing member of the Global Database Management Services Team.

Description

Process Engineers provide process technical expertise and services focused on enhancing the safety, reliability and profitability of either a process flow or a specific unit performance. This position interfaces with all departments throughout the refinery including operations, maintenance, planning and technical services. This position resides within the technical services department.

Responsibilities

The Process Engineer is responsible for:

* Monitoring/evaluating unit performance and maintaining effective monitoring reports.
* Troubleshooting operational and process quality problems.
* Developing solutions for unit optimization.
* Generating process design improvement projects for strategic and real business improvement.
* Providing technical content for operating procedures.
* Providing detailed process specifications and maintaining P&ID's and equipment data sheets.
* Completing process hazard analysis and process safety management (PSM) requirements.
* Developing and monitoring key performance metrics for assigned units.
* Providing guidance to operations consistent with environmental and operational requirements.
* Maintaining capital and operating expense budget.
* Working outdoors around the units and having the ability to climb ladders and towers and to wear Personal Protective Equipment.

Laboratory Technicians perform a variety of analysis and tests of refinery products, process streams and environmental samples in a technically complex, highly automated refinery laboratory. * Requires five to seven years of professional experience in interactive web communications /new media, branding, campaign management, creative agency service and/or front-line sales
* At least two years experience in interactive web communications required. Some experience managing creative agencies and media buying / contracting required; three years preferred
* Experience in the energy industry, financial services sector or trading a plus
* Requires extremely high written and visual communication skills with ability to effectively communicate complex ideas in simple, visually appealing ways through a variety of media. Attention to detail a must. Understanding of web programming strongly preferred
* Requires demonstrated project management discipline with strong task orientation and some experience managing a team
* Preference for persuasive communication and change management skills
* Requires strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relations at multiple levels across SENA. Prefer some experience at managing interfaces with other Shell and affiliated businesses
* Bachelor's degree or higher required

Shell is currently seeking a Field Engineer - Mining* to work at the Fort McMurray Albian Sands mining project.

Responsibilities:

* Coordination of field control of mining activities (open pit, tailings and waste dumps)
* Coordination of field control for site services
* Design of short and long term haul truck accesses
* Assist Resource Geologist in assuring ore recovery targets are met
* Input to the Senior Short Range Engineers on development of mine plans
* Other mining related projects as assigned by the Senior Short Range Engineer



Requirements:

* Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full time basis for anyone other than current employer
* No "fly in, fly out" option is offered with this position. Relocation to Fort McMurray is required
* B.Science, Mining, Civil Engineering, Geology
* Proficiency in English, both written and verbal
* Previous open pit shovel truck experience, and pit optimization
* Individual must be comfortable working in a multitask environment
* Must be able to work well with operations personnel in order to achieve objectives
* Must be prepared to occasionally work in harsh environmental conditions
* Proficiency in MS Office suite of products
* Experience with modular dispatch
* Experience with mine moduling an asset
